| Harrodsburg, Kentucky founded June 16, 1774, by James Harrod, was the first permanent English settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains. In all probability, Morgan Row on South Chiles Street, built in 1807, is the oldest existing row house west of the Alleghenies. The original Fort Harrod was erected in 1774 by Captain James Harrod as protection from Indian attacks. The Old Fort Harrod has been faithfully recreated, including a replica of Kentucky's first school house. On the grounds is the Lincoln Marriage Temple, housing the log cabin in which Abraham Lincoln's parents were wed. The oldest cemetary west of the Alleghenies contains the graves of over five hundred early settlers and is located in Fort Harrod State Park. Greenville Springs and Harrodsburg Springs were among the finest spas in the south during the latter part of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, giving Harrodsbug the reputation of being "The Saratoga of the South." Beaumont College, a notable school for girls, was built on the site of Greenville Springs and is now an inn and restaurant. Eight miles from town is Pleasant Hill, a restored Shaker Village. Harrodsburg was the location of several Skirmishes during the Civil War. Many Historic structures and ante-bellum homes remain. |
